Leviticus 5:14 - 6:7

The Trespass Offering

Trespass Offering:

  • Romans 4:25 (offences = trespasses)
  • Ephesians 1:7 (sins=trespasses)
  • Colossians 2:13 (Trespasses same as sins in the same verse)

Greek: paraptoma = falling aside when one should have stood upright, a fault or trespass.

The Typical teaching

Christ not only suffered for sin but also for sins.

He was judged for what we are sinners with a sinful nature; but He died for what we did.

Our sins and trespasses are forgiven on the ground of Christs substitutionary sacrifice.

The Trespass Offering pointed two ways:

  • Godward: mans trespasses of the holy things (Leviticus 5:14-19)
  • Manward: mans trespasses against one another (Leviticus 6:1-7)

Cases of trespass against Jehovah in the holy things:

  • Deuteronomy 32:51. Adopting ones own methods in Gods service. Moses struck the rock when told to speak to it (cf. Numbers 20:7-11, 12).
  • Joshua 7:1; 22:20 NIV accursed = devoted appropriating for oneself what belongs to God.
  • 1 Chronicles 10:13; Cf. 1 Samuel 13:13, 14 and 15:23. Compromising with Gods specific directions King Saul and Amalek.
  • 1 Chronicles 10:13, 14. Failure to enquire of the Lord in prayer; inquired instead of a familiar spirit. Dabbling in the occult (Leviticus 19:31; Isaiah 8:14).
  • 2 Chronicles 12:2 transgressed = trespassed RV. See v.1 strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the Lord. Relying on ones own strength instead of resting on Gods word.
  • 2 Chronicles 26:18. Presumption in the worship of God; acting on ones own authority.
  • 2 Chronicles 29:6, 7. Failure to render to Jehovah what was His right. Forsakenturned away their faceturned their backsshut up the doorsput out the lampsnot burned incensenor offered burnt offerings.
  • Ezra 9:2; 10:2, 10. Transgressed= trespassed RV. Distinct disobedience to the commands of the Lord.
  • The word trespass occurs in all the above scriptures and is the same word in Leviticus 5:15 ( maal)

Trespass against others Leviticus 6:2, 3

Five illustrations

  • V.2 lie unto his neighbor in that which was delivered him to keep (Romans 1:14-15; 1 Corinthians 9:16-23) deal falsely with his neighbor in a matter of deposit RV. Unfaithfulness to a trust (Misappropriation) (1 Timothy 1:8).

  • V.2 or in a thing taken away by violence; or by robbery RV. Under the plea of legal form, takes from another more than is due to him. 1 Kings 21:1-16
