“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost” (Isaiah 55:1).
Though God gave the Israelites ‘manna’, ‘the grain of heaven’, ‘the bread of angels’, they detested it (Numbers 21:5), and called it “miserable”, and fell to craving for the fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic of Egypt (Numbers 11:5). It is no wonder that even today God’s people consider the pearls of His Word as mere pebbles, and the holy things as merely ordinary, longing for other food according to their lusts. It is no wonder that earthly man prefers the earthly food to the heavenly. But God always provides satisfying food for those who are poor in spirit and who hunger and thirst for righteousness, and they live and grow through it. On the other hand, those who are rich in spirit, self-satisfied and do not know hunger for the heavenly things, spend all their resources on that which never satisfies (Isaiah 55:2).
